Voice Studio

My teaching style is relaxed, fun, and very personalized. I place emphasis on healthy vocal production and cultivating physical self-awareness that leads to grounded, confident singing. My students display a wide range of musical backgrounds and interests, from professional and amateur opera and choral singers, to singer-songwriters, music theater and rock/pop performers. I enjoy working with beginners of all ages, and do my best to make lessons comfortable and engaging for students who are new to vocal practice.

I am not a proponent of any one pedagogical method, but rather draw from my varied influences and experiences as a student, vocalist and music fan. These include classic Italianate vocalizes and breath techniques; five years of vocal training in the Oren Brown lineage; a year of voice and speech therapy work at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; M.Mus. courses in vocal pedagogy; two decades fronting bands in genres ranging from funk to folk-rock; training in Yoga, Qigong, Feldenkrais, and Alexander techniques; and many enjoyable years of improvisation, trial and error.

VIRTUAL FORMAT

At this time I am offering lessons and coachings primarily online, using Zoom as well as other platforms including FaceTime, Skype and Google Meet. I am extremely thankful for the potential offered by these platforms to connect with students worldwide, and have been delighted with both the process and the results. I find the format of online teaching enables us to take a deep dive into technical skills such as breathing, resonance and vowel articulation. It’s also marvelous for exploring topics such as body posture, tongue/jaw tension, diction/language/translation, and experimenting with new repertoire and musical styles (in the virtual realm we can be limitless!)

In essence, what initially seemed to most of us a huge imposition has revealed itself to offer many unexpected advantages.

Wherever you live, no matter what kind of music you’re curious to explore, and whatever stage of your vocal journey you may be in, I’m certain I have something positive to offer you. Send me an email and let’s talk!

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

  • "Ann is the finest voice teacher I have ever worked with. While we met before the pandemic, working with her through Zoom has enabled my singing to flourish in ways I never anticipated. The ability to take lessons from my own home means I don't need to travel to my lesson - I can finish my workday remotely and log directly onto zoom for my lesson. We can accomplish everything online that we once did in person, and I'm more relaxed and comfortable while we're doing so. Taking lessons at home also builds the practice of singing in my own space, which is so important for continued improvement. I wear headphones while we work and it's like we're in the room together!"

  • "I have taken lessons with Ann for several years, in person and on Zoom. The lessons on Zoom have worked amazingly well. I particularly like having a recording to practice with, review old lessons, and hear the progress I’ve made. When reviewing old lessons I can see both of us on the screen and zoom in for close ups. Ann is a great teacher!"

  • "In the one and a half years since I started studying with Ann I have made so much progress! This is my first time taking voice lessons online, and I have been pleasantly surprised not only with how much I am enjoying the lessons, but also with how much I am able to learn. Part of the reason it is working so well is because Ann's warm and encouraging personality really translates very well on this online platform. Also, I think that having the recording of the lesson has made it easier for me to practice, and my new daily practice routine has helped to accelerate my progress. The convenience of not having to go anywhere makes it so much easier to schedule lessons, not to mention the fact that I live way too far away to be able to consider taking in person lessons! I am so grateful that I found Ann and that I have been able to have access to her expertise and her intuitive way of teaching."

  • "I’ve been taking voice lessons with Ann for ten years, so I had an abundance of in-person lessons before shifting to online. I wasn’t sure at first how it’d go, but I quickly found there are many things I like about the online approach: I really appreciate the ability to watch my posture and jaw etc as we’re working; we used to use a mirror when we were in person, but this works just as well. And with Ann right there on the screen with me, often giving me helpful cues, I can easily glance back and forth between the two of us. Ann is tech savvy, so I find the sound quality quite good between us, and we have rarely experienced time lags or other kind of problems that I had thought might arise. Having the session recordings afterwards is very helpful as well. And Ann is great about sending them however I’d like (e.g., I usually like to have the warm-ups in a separate file from the rep we work on that day). And… NO stress getting stuck in traffic "on my way” there!"

  • "I was referred to Ann for voice lessons by a friend who sings in the same chorus as I do. I have been working with Ann for almost a year and a half, all via Zoom. Our lessons have been educational, fulfilling, and even fun. Her warmups are creative – they vary from lesson to lesson, all relating to the section we are going to be working on. Ann is gentle and sensitive in her approach to teaching, and her knowledge of music and voice production is astounding. I feel inspired by her. The lessons have increased my confidence in my singing, and even raised my vocal ability to get to some top notes, something I have never been able to do."

ABOUT ANN

Ann Moss has been teaching voice for over 24 years and is widely sought-out by singers of all ages and experience levels. She holds two graduate degrees in Vocal Performance and has had the honor of working with many of today’s best musicians and teachers in private studio and public workshop settings. In addition to her extensive performance career in many areas of classical singing, Ann has performed and recorded in popular genres including funk, folk-rock, and r&b.

Ann’s students range in age from 11 to 85, and display a wide range of vocal backgrounds, experience levels and goals. In addition to classical, choral, operatic and musical theater singers, Ann’s private studio includes pop, folk, bluegrass, liturgical, Irish trad, rock, punk and heavy metal vocalists. She has become known among singer-songwriters as a “one stop shop” for vocal and song-writing coaching, and enjoys this work immensely. She enjoys how the broad spectrum of vocal styles represented in her studio informs her teaching and artistry on every level. “In this age of genre blending and cross-pollination, the demands of contemporary vocal repertoire continually evolve. The skill-set required of a freelance vocalist today covers so much stylistic ground. It’s crucial to stay in touch with our ever-changing sonic landscape.”

Ann approaches each student as an individual, working with them to come up with a lesson format that best suits their particular needs. She is not a proponent of any one pedagogical method, but rather draws from her varied influences and experiences as a student, vocalist and listener. These include classic Italianate vocalizes and breath techniques; five years of vocal training in the Oren Brown lineage; a year of voice and speech therapy work at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; the full MM course in vocal pedagogy as taught at the Longy School of Music; a decade fronting bands in genres ranging from funk to folk-rock; training in Yoga, Feldenkrais and Alexander techniques; and many enjoyable years of improvisation, trial and error.
